Great job MR!
Watched again. Liked 56. Great video.
@@Diebulfrog79 thanks Al.
👍👍
Good video. We use regular sand with a disk sander, a small bit of sand use the sander until the sand gets dirty pour it out then add more sand and repeat until done.
well tell me what better than going to my range. then coming home to watch one of these videos ... I agree definitely fat.... I actually have shared this one on my mags info area... Makes sense I never have turned mine upside down for the baking... wow made sense thanks my friend
Glad the video was useful. The reason you turn it upside down is that the fat can’t pool. This would cause a sticky spot in the seasoning. If it’s inverted it prevents that from happening.
@@ModernRefugee see you can teach an old dawg new tricks
Love my cast iron. Have occasionally found forgotten pieces that were rusted out.
I’ve always used lard. Thing looks great
Lard is great.
If only that cast iron pot could talk and tell it's story. Great video!
Thank you!
People often have unrealistic notions about “bugging out.” We certainly did, until we did it in the spring of 2020. We didn’t realize how much more difficult every task and aspect of life would become. And then, the mental and emotional impacts were, let’s just say, significant. We stuck it out for 2 & 1/2 years, but it was hard. “Bugging in” is probably a better option - IF you are fortunate enough to have a place safe from “jackboots” and looters.
I use my cast iron skillet almost daily.
Wow looks like new? After cooking in it do you just wipe it clean with a paper towel?
@@bobbader4789 yes, you can also wash it lightly but don’t over do it.
Thank you. Seasoned a few pieces that we were able to get for free last year. Heated mine the to burn off everything on the grill then seasoned it in the grill after. Have a blessed day.
You have a blessed day as well!
A 400 lb. bear is hoss of a bear. Wow. Did you render grease from it? I’d like to know how you go about that. Yes, the creek cool-down works well. I’ve used it for antelope a few times, since it’s often quite warm in early September - antelope season here. Thank you.
You cut the fat off, chunk it up and slowly heat it. It’s the same process as rendering lard from a hog. Just take your time and stir often. You don’t want it to get too hot. So keep an eye on the temp.
Thumbs Up
We recently picked up four iron skillets for $5 at an estate auction. I believe they’d been bought new but never used - they still had adhesive residue on the cooking surface. They apparently sat for years in a barn and rusted up. We’re going to restore them, season them, and use them. I’ve done this before, but I used coarse steel wool and sand paper. That took a lot of elbow grease. We’ll be buying a wire wheel for the drill today. I believe that’s a much better way. Thank you.
@@robbicampbell7890 your welcome!
Beautiful job! I was fortunate to inherit several really old cast iron pieces, from a small fry pan to a Dutch oven...a few pieces need to be freshened up. Now that I think about it, some are about 100 years old 😯 Thanks for the demonstration... it's well worth the time invested, especially when you have quality pieces 😎👍
Beautiful! I have a couple old cornstick pans that need reviving. Thanks for posting this.
Our washing machine we bought with the house. It's 40 years old and bullet proof. In the 10 years we have had it my parents bought 3 "nice new" machines. The prices keep going up and the quality goes down buy people buy them because of the fancy paint job and because that's about all the sell now.
Good info! Question. What are the little spikes or knobs under the lid for?
They are for braising. As the food cooks the moisture condenses on those spikes and goes back into the pot.
@@ModernRefugee thanks, MR. I picked up a Dutch oven at a yard sale for $10 and It had them and I didn’t know why. Now I finally do!
@@patriotpreacher43 you welcome!
Ive recently inherited a few pieces of old cast iron from family. No one wanted, because it was old and needed to be reseasoned. But it's pretty good quality compared to a lot of the modern stuff. I still have a couple pieces to finish.
I find the old stuff is always better.
This is always good info! Although having done this for many years, it's amazing that cast iron isn't the high maintenance that some think it is. Initial work, good care, it's the best cookware.
Thack You ❤
Great stuff, as usual MR. I love my cast iron dutch oven.
Happy Sunday MR! Thanks for sharing 😊

Have a great day my friend!
Nice, I love restoring old cast iron. I’ve realized that I’m to the point where I have enough.😂
I live my cast iron.
Gorgeous pot !
Thank you!
MR, how do I get SCRAMBLED eggs 🥚 to not stick to my CI skillet ? This one has a nice smooth finish on it but still sticks. Any advice?
Do a little deep frying in that skillet. We like making our own tortilla chips. We get the soft corn tortillas and deep fry them. Deep frying allows the CI to drink in more seasoning and it speeds up the process. You still have to add a little butter when you’re making your eggs, but that should help.
Oh that’s important to know!
MR, good vid !. The problem with my CI skillet is it is so pitted, craters, nooks & crannies. I still use it but it is not non-stick anymore. Help!
Pitting is tough, I don’t really have a remedy for that. You would have to sand it down past the pits, but then the CI would be weak in that spot. It may not be worth the effort.
Get the pan nice and warm, put some oil in it, I use a paper towel to spread it around. Then about 1 TBSP of butter and slowly dump the scrambled eggs in. I use a rubber spatula to go around the edges loosen them up. Eggs are tricky bc if you move them around too fast, they’ll stick and if you wait too long they burn but hope these tips help! Happy cooking 😊
Good Sunday morning everyone! My wife uses a container with white vinegar in it and every soften scrubs it with a pot scrubber. Changing vinegar a couple times doesn't take long and rust and buildup is gone and ready to season. But I've seen so many ways that they all seem to work great.
Thanks for the info! I have a cast iron pot that needs to be done so this video is timely!
We've had those posters at our local hospital for a couple of years now, maybe longer. I'm on the West Coast of Canada and we're a little further down the crazy train track than you in the US.
Thank you!
Excellent topic that I have been struggling with. Do we downsize, where do we go, how do we do it...can't get my husband to think about where we are headed. I'll just keep working on it. Thanks for sharing this video!
Who is the duffle bag made by?
Osage river
You’re thinking too much! Lol just do what you can now and things will work themselves out. You have to have more faith.
Great common sense points that are not really discussed elsewhere. Maybe it’s because you are not selling or being sponsored by prepper toy makers? Just a thought….
Thank you Sir. My surgery is Monday 7/8 and I’m scared of the bag and not going to gym
I have a ''walking staff'' that is 6 ft 6" long...that I made from a 'yard broom handle'. It's also got a rubber tip at the end. I call it a TMPATMADSPAM...that is a 'Tactical' ( becuase its black ) multi purpose, all terrain, mobility assistance device, and short portable antenna mast'. It's literally a multi purpose tool that has attachments for two high power flashlights ( LED ) that can swivel in any direction, it hold's two red flashing lights that I originally got for my bike. It has 50 feet of paracord wrapped round it's handle...which I can use for all sorts of things. I can use it for setting up a bivvi, I can use it for fishing, it could be used as a spear or quarter staff if needed, and I also use it as a 'short portable antenna mast' with a half wave dipole ( roughly 8' 6" on each half ) for use on CB radio In a 'inverted V' configuration. It works well for that !
I appreciate this philosophy. Well said.
Thanks for the ramblings, they're all valid. When we're young, we think its forever and that we'll never grow old; when we grow old its hard to remember what it was to be young. Stay well & safe, and if you're able to ramble your an answer, please share it with the rest of us🙂🙂
The sadist thing is we are not going to be able to retire and when the entire banking system crashes it's over for everyone checking savings accounts 401K insurance policies any kind of stocks bonds entitlement checks credit cards that's all going to be gone and wiped out so downsizing is one thing when you get older I'm older too now I keep buying all I can because when you can't then that's it until then I'm going to buying as much as I can I probably won't get my social security next year that's going to be a lot of people going to be in that position when the preps are gone then hardcore survival starts. People have no idea how dangerous its going to become when people shooting at you all the time every day if you don't get it every day consider yourself lucky.🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏🙏🙏🌎🌍⏳⌛⏳⌛⏳⌛🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖🪖

Awesome advice
My challenges have always been Mobility. Crippled/busted knee and leg bone, since i was 17. 48years later, much much worse! I am in countryside. Couple of times i was without wheels. Not pretty! 7 miles to edge of town, 9-15 to grocery stores. I have bicycles, but not the legs to use them! I CAN handle a Monthly Shopping Trip, if i have a ride. The neighbour i know, NEVER Offers any Help! Shes a weid one! She watches everything i DO, but couldnt notice my truck never left for 13 Months!! I talk to her, she never ever Offers! I am a Loner, now that my Ex died, no more alternate vehicles! I got my youngest daughter with Beginner's and Insured on my car. With intention. But if she moves away? Car stays with me. I would have much better luck getting someone to Drive me to Town, when.my car is here and functioning!
Great subject! I would like to hear more ideas on what we can do to prepare for getting older.
That's what I've been saying all along. Learn to live without.....without automatic hot water, doing your business in a bucket if necessary, making plant medicines, wearing a loincloth for underwear if that's all you've got left. One by one, think about everything you own, every single item, and picture life without it. And if you need its function, find a simpler way to fall back. As I get older and less able to lift and can't do any heavy work, I've just made my life simpler. And people think that means MORE conveniences when it means fewer systems in the first place.
64 now….definitely these thoughts going through my head my mind.
